Nicky Milne directs and executive produces documentary films and videos, with a particular specialism in environmental and human rights stories. Having come from a background in Law at the LSE, and an MA Photojournalism, she has filmed in over 50 countries, and her work is rooted in rigorous journalism, intimate access, and beauty.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Nicky and her team filmed in the USA, looking at how the environment one lives in, determines one’s health. These hour-long films will transmit April 2022. PBS/TRF.

Nicky spent four years at Thomson Reuters Foundation, the philanthropic wing of Reuters Global News Network, as Head of Documentaries, where she fostered a long-term relationship with PBS, California, making environmental films for their award winning series, “Earth Focus.” Travelling extensively, wth tight budgets and deadlines, an easy-going yet tenacious nature have been critical - along with flexibility and a sense of humour! Each of her films has been accepted to festivals - and/or won awards, including a regional Emmy for her film about fossil fuels in South Africa, an International Oceans Festival Award, for her film about communities in Madagascar, best short women's film for her doc. about African women becoming solar engineers, and best LGBTQ film for her film for the anniversary of The Stonewall Riots. Her work has been shortlisted to One World Media Awards, The European Press Prize and Amnesty Media Awards 2020.

Prior to TRF, Nicky worked as Head of Film and Photo a global NGO, Christian Aid, leading a team, pushing boundaries with respect within a traditional organisation. She self-shot, directed and exec-ed a vast number of shorts E.g. “Raise Your Voice for Climate Change”, “Malaria: all children have a future” , “Ebola: the role of faith leaders”, and “Give Life This Christmas” . She also championed an auction of world-renowned photographers’ work, “Capture The Essence” .

In the past, Nicky has worked as a Commissioner with BBC Factual overseeing programmes such as “This OBE is Not For Me” and “The Private Life of Harley St” and as a director she has made countless hours of television, including flagship shows such as “Panorama”, “Great Railway Journeys”, “Into Africa” with Skip Gates, “The Trial of Freedom” with Michael Ignatieff.

Nicky began her career with the prestigious Def 11 Youth programming unit; she reported for BBC Youth and presented, researched for Granada Television, in the northwest of England.

She has sensitively and smartly interviewed a very wide variety of people, including royalty, celebrities, world-class politicians, scientists, survivors of human trafficking, those with mental health issues, and many who have suffered traumatic experiences in a myriad of ways.

She has presented her work at universities, film festivals, conferences around the world, served on Juries including TVE Sustainable Awards, hosted/taken part in numerous panel discussions, and written multiple features for Reuters alongside her films.

With an MA in Photojournalism, Nicky photographs at every opportunity. Her photos forms part of the prestigious Reuters Photo Archive as well as being purchased by the Jewish Museum, London, accompanying features, & used for key NGO campaigns, & websites.. She has exhibited a personal body of work “The Intimacy of Belief“ in solo and group exhibitions in London.

Nicky is determined to tell stories which help bring impact, or spur the thought of change with style, stunning visuals, strong journalism, and integrity.
